Phone Scams 2025: Why Your Caller ID Can't Be Trusted

December 6, 2025 ScamGuard Academy Team

Scammers can make their calls appear to come from ANY number - even your bank, the IRS, or your own phone number!

Common Phone Scam Types

  • IRS/Tax Scams - Threatening arrest for unpaid taxes
  • Social Security Scams - Claiming your number is "suspended"
  • Tech Support Scams - Fake virus warnings from "Microsoft"
  • Grandparent Scams - "Grandchild" needs money urgently
Critical Warning

Caller ID can be completely faked. Don't trust the number you see on your screen!

The Golden Rule

If someone calls asking for money or personal info: Hang up and call back using a number you find independently (official website or bill statement).
